Vintage Wedding Hair & Makeup: A Natural, Modern Take
Can I let you in on a little secret? Vintage is one of my absolute favourite briefs to receive.
There's something so special about a bride who knows she wants a vintage look. She usually comes to me with a Pinterest board full of old Hollywood glamour, a dress with a neckline that could have come straight from the 1950s, and a very clear sense of who she is. That is my kind of wedding morning.
But I also know that "vintage" can feel a little daunting. What era? How far do you go? Will you still look like you? So I wanted to write a little something to take the mystery out of it and show you how a vintage wedding look can be the most beautiful, natural, and completely you thing you'll ever wear.
'Vintage' doesn't mean one thing
This is the first thing I always say to my vintage brides, and it usually comes as a relief.
Vintage covers such a wide and gorgeous range. We're talking the 1920s finger waves and Art Deco glamour. The soft, romantic Hollywood waves of the 1940s. The pin-up curls and winged liner of the 1950s. The bouffants and doe eyes of the 1960s. The effortless, floppy waves of the 1970s. Every era has its own mood, its own magic, and you get to choose what resonates with you.
And here's the really exciting bit, you don't have to pick just one. Some of my favourite looks have been a 1940s wave with a very modern, barely-there makeup. Or a 1960s updo with the freshest, dewiest skin. Vintage-inspired is just as beautiful as full vintage, and it always, always feels more wearable.
Why vintage and natural beauty are made for each other
You might think vintage makeup means heavy, cakey, full-coverage everything, but the most beautiful vintage looks are all about the skin.
Think about the old Hollywood screen tests. The focus was luminous, glowing, healthy skin, because the cameras demanded it. A clear complexion, a soft flush, a beautifully blended base. That's clean beauty territory, and it's exactly what I love to create.
I use only natural, organic, and cruelty-free products in my kit, and they are genuinely perfect for achieving a vintage finish. A sheer, skin-tinted base that lets your natural beauty shine through. A cream blush that melts into the skin and gives you that 1950s glow. A clean, cruelty-free red lip that would make Grace Kelly very happy indeed.
The products I use are better for your skin and they photograph beautifully. What's not to love?
The looks I love creating most
My absolute favourite vintage bridal look is what I call the natural vintage, think gorgeous, glowing skin, softly swept hair, and one classic feature that nods to the era. A soft winged liner. A beautiful deep lip. A low, structured wave. It's the kind of look that photographs timelessly and feels completely effortless to wear all day.
I also love a proper Hollywood wave; that classic, sweeping, old-school glamour that works on so many hair lengths and textures. Paired with luminous skin and a nude lip, it feels modern and bridal all at once.
And for the brides who want to go a little further, I am absolutely here for it. I just always make sure that however bold the hair, the makeup keeps you looking fresh and like yourself, not like you're in a costume.
Because that's the whole point, isn't it? The look should feel like the best, most beautiful version of you, not a character you're playing.
A little reassurance, from me to you
If you're drawn to vintage but you're worried about going too far, please don't be. We talk everything through at your trial, and we find the balance together. I love the process of trying different things, seeing what lights you up in the mirror, and getting to the look that makes you feel wonderful.
I've had brides come to me thinking they want full 1920s glamour and end up with something much softer and more romantic. And brides who came in just wanting "a hint of vintage" who absolutely loved going all in once they saw it on. There's no right or wrong, it's your day and your face and your moment.
What I can promise is that whatever we create together will be beautiful, natural, and completely and wonderfully you.
